No matter where we are, our eyes will stumble upon stray dogs. It is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of stray dogs, wagging their tails from the busiest streets to the most hidden alleys. Indeed, this has become a normal sight for everyday folks. Although there is realization on the existence of this issue in our society, yet nothing has been done to tackle it.
Fourteen years ago, veterinary students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) decided that a change was needed. They decided to walk the walk instead of just talk, therefore, Dogathon™ was born. Dogathon™, an event organised by this group of students, is their way of voicing out the evident issue our country is facing.
Dogathon™ kick started in 1997 as a platform in addressing the issue of “Stray Dogs Awareness”. This was a really great way for the society to either directly or indirectly plays a part in addressing this issue. Hence, Dogathon™ was initiated as a charity drive, organised by the third year veterinary students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UPM. Dogathon™ is held annually to raise funds in aid of “Stray Dogs Awareness” programs and assist the annual PRO-KASIH program. Even with its serious mission, it is still a fun-filled event, giving exposure to all types of dogs as well as dog owners to indulge in something out of the ordinary.
The main highlight of the event is the Dogathon™ Race where dogs and owners are required to run side by side for 2.6 km in the early morning coolness under the shady trees of UPM. This event never fails to be favourite every year among the people attending Dogathon™. Every year, great games and activities for both dogs and owners have been a hallmark of each Dogathon™.
Dogathon™ stands out among any other dog events. It is unlike any other dog show where dogs are caged-up for the purpose of exhibition. Instead, it is a day where pedigree and non-pedigree dogs are all welcomed to come out and have fun.
Three years ago, Dogathon™ 2008 successfully broke the record of “BIGGEST DOG GATHERING IN MALAYSIA” in the MALAYSIA BOOK OF RECORDS by gathering 611 dogs. Last year, Dogathon™ again broke the record by successfully gathering a total number of 1111 dogs! So, don’t miss the chance to be a part of our event this year!
